We still get lots of questions about ammunition laws that took effect at the beginning of this month. I’d like to set the record straight.

There are no caliber restrictions!
There are no quantity restrictions!
There is no ammunition “ID card”!

So how do these background checks for ammunition work?

If your information is on file with the CA DOJ already (meaning you’ve purchased a firearm at your current address, generally in the last few years), you provide a current Drivers License and your address, you pay a $1 background check fee, you walk out with your ammunition.

If your information is NOT on file with the CA DOJ, then you have three options. The first is the most fun, BUY A GUN!! The second is to have an FFL run a standard background check for $19, this can take up to 10 days but in our experience is usually around 5-6 days. This is a ONE TIME check as long as your information remains the same, after this you would only need the $1 background check for future purchases. The third option is FREE, that’s right FREE. You can update your information in the CA DOJ CFARS system online (this worked for me and only took about 12 hours, I was able to do it from home).

If you’ve got more questions, don’t hesitate to stop by and ask us, call us, or message us on Facebook/Instagram. If you need information on updating information on CFARS, we have some documentation that MAY help you through the process, we can email that to you.
